Reporting on mental health, alcohol and other drugs

For media reporting on mental health, alcohol and other drugs, the Mindframe website is a great resource to help you provide responsible, accurate and sensitive representation of mental illness, suicide, and alcohol and other drugs in the media.

The Australian Press Council also provides guidelines on drugs and drug addiction and health and medical matters.

The Mental Health Coordinating Council's  Recovery Orientated Language Guide is a comprehensive language guide to using the right words when supporting mental health recovery with sections on diversity inclusive language, working with people experiencing grief and loss, and recovery language usage in the written word.

The Commission has also produced a Guide for Media Reporting on Volatile Substance Use. This is a media guide to raise awareness about the responsible reporting of volatile substances - sometimes known as inhalants.
